24 Days of Christmas - Day 1

A few years ago, we made a book for some friends and family. For each day of December, leading up to Christmas Eve, we included a carol, scripture, story or talk or poem, and Christmas recipe. We enjoy using this book again every year. We definitely do not use it every night, though if you have the time it would be wonderful to have a family devotional using these songs, scriptures and stories for each night (or morning) of December. Even though we don't use it every night, it is a good way to bring the Christmas spirit in our home when we do have time. We thought it would be fun to share these on our blog. Even though I'm starting late (I meant to start December 1) I'll catch up now and try to keep it going through the month.

So, here is Day 1:

Carol: O Come All Ye Faithful, Hymn #202

Scripture: 3 Nephi 1:13 Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I unto the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.

Poem: Living Candles by Regnald Holmes

If you left the Christmas spirit

Tucked away upon the shelf

Take it down and start the season

By the giving of yourself.

Just by saying “Merry Christmas”

With a smile upon your face,

You can make some person happy

And the world a better place.

If life’s hardly worth the living,

Find yourself a worthy cause;

Take that basket to the needy,

Make believe you're Santa Claus.

If the spark of faith is feeble,

You may well be reconciled

If you read the Christmas story

To a lonely little child.

If you’re someone who is looking

For a mission to fulfill,

Be a living Christmas candle

On the world’s wide windowsill.

Recipe: Christmas Sugar Cookies

What is more cheerful at Christmas time that a plate of brightly frosted sugar cookies? I love this recipe for sugar cookies; the almond extract makes them so delicious! Make a batch with some children that you love, or make up plates to share with neighbors and friends. These cookies are guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone’s face!

1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. almond extract (or substitute vanilla)
3 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. cream of tarter
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs and almond extract. Mix in all the other dry ingredients. Refrigerate for a couple of hours. Roll out until the dough is about 1/4” thick and cut into Christmas shapes. (Don’t make them too thin!) Bake at 350 for 8 minutes. Do not over bake, and they’ll stay yummy and soft! Frost with frosting recipe below.

Frosting

1/3 c. margarine, softened
3 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. almond extract or vanilla
about 2 T. milk
food coloring in various colors

Blend together well and spread onto cooled cookies.
