Whoa, baby...

...Gerald's grad school program is intense!  We knew it was going to be a lot of work and luckily I married a guy with a great work ethic.  He has been doing well at school, pulling A's so far on all his assignments.  But he has already pulled an all-nighter or two, and on a typical day has been leaving before Katelee wakes up in the morning and returning sometime later than 7 p.m.  And even when he is home, he has the homework cloud hanging over his head.  So we eat a quick dinner and he goes into the bedroom to work while I try to keep Katelee out of his hair.

I don't mean to make this sound like he isn't spending any time with us; he definitely does his best to spend what time he does have with us and the time we spend together is certainly quality time.  And he makes an effort to only have this schedule 6 days a week so we at least have Sundays together.  But, let's just face it, he is a lot busier than he was when he was only working a 50 hour work week.  :)

Anyway, I thought we were all adjusting well with the new schedule, until Katelee made the following comments to me today just out of the blue while driving in the car:

Katelee: "Mom, you know that when we moved we got new friends?"

Mom:  "Yes, we sure did."

Katelee:  "Well, when we get a new daddy, let's name him Playquinn."

Mom: "Ummm...we are not getting a new daddy, honey.  Your daddy is Gerald, and your daddy will always be Gerald."

Katelee:  "Okay, but when we get a new one, let's name him Playquinn."

The end of that conversation went nowhere fast.  Then, we pulled into our apartment complex:

Katelee:  "Hey, this is where we live!"

Mom:  "Yup, you're right."

Katelee:  "Where does daddy live?"

Mom:  "Katelee, daddy lives with us, in our apartment."

Katelee:  "Ooooh!  So daddy has an apartment like us?"

Mom:  "No, daddy has the SAME apartment as us."

Katelee:  "Is his name Playquinn?"

Silence.  What do you say to that?

  1. OH my gosh. I'm sorry, but that is so funny. I definately laughed out loud to that one. Sorry. I hope Katelee figures out she is not getting a new daddy, especially a new one named Playquinn.

  2. Charlie did the same thing with Andy's grad program and it was hard being a 'single' mom. He'll adjust as it goes along and you'll find the balance in it all. Good luck! You guys are troopers.

  3. I just read that to Brandon and all he could say is "that sucks!" Oh, and definitely don't let Katelee name any new family members.

  4. As sad as that is...I totally had to laugh out loud at the conversation you had with Katelee! What a creative name for a dad, too! :)

  5. Oh I'm laughing!! Playquinn! That is an awesome name! But sorry she's so confused. I hope Gerald recognizes the threat of being replaced by some stud named Playquinn and works his hardest to keep you all happy!

  6. Playquinn - that's hilarious! What a fun conversation. By the way, school is not my favorite season. Law school has been intense, but I think the PhD program Jeremy was in was actually worse. He'd pull an all-nighter at least a couple of times a month and was up until 2 or so on the rest of the nights. It's worth it, right? :)

  7. Children have such creative imaginations. When my niece Marie was about Katelee's age she was playing like she was (we'll say) Brenda, and her younger brother Mark was George. But it gets better. Marie, pretending to be Brenda was pretending to be Sally; and she was pretending that Mark pretending to be George was pretending to be Bob.

How about if you tell Katelee that daddy Gerald's new nickname is Playquinn. If it sticks you will have a great story to tell her children.

  8. That's funny. I hope she realizes that Gerald really is around! Playquinn is so creative. I wonder where she came up with that?! :)
