Better Safe . . .

Yes, Gerald and I agree that we had better make our blog private.  It makes me a little sad, because I know from my own personal experience that people aren't as likely to read a private blog, but since the purpose of this blog is to record our family memories it is probably best to be private.  Hopefully some of you will still read it!

Draper Temple Open House

Last night the three of us visited the new Draper Temple open house.  It was a great opportunity to be able to take Katelee and teach her more about the temple.  She was excited about the whole experience.  At one point as we were first entering the temple she clutched Gerald's leg and squealed, "Now we are all going to get married!"  She particularly loved the beautiful baptismal font (a.k.a. "swimming pool") with the carved oxen.  The entire temple was stunning; I really loved the colors of the interior.  The experience reminded us of how blessed we are to have the restored gospel on the earth.

Here is a picture of Gerald and Katelee waiting to board the bus to the temple.

After the temple, we took Katelee to McDonald's to celebrate the fact that she is 100% potty-trained!  Hooray Katelee!  She had a wonderful night!

I've caught the blogging itch..

So, as many of you know, I have had a blog now for months and months and I have never posted.  But recently I have just really had the urge to write and record more of the things that are happening to our family, and I like that with a blog you can share those memories with others.  So, we'll see if I keep it up or not.

I know that the post below about Katelee's haircut is really disorganized.  I will have to figure out how to move pictures around and not cut the text in half and so forth.  Give me time.  I'm new at this!  :)

What a big girl!

Yes, it's true.  Katelee is almost three and really starting to act like a big girl.  This week she began wearing big-girl underwear and using the toilet!  Hooray!  She has done a great job at potty training, probably because we waited until she was this old.  Also, she had her first "big girl" haircut.  The haircut wasn't planned, however.  It was a result of Katelee choosing to cut  her own hair first.  The hair on top of her head was in a twist pony-tail going to one side, and Katelee cut off the pony-tail part of her hair.  Nice.
So, to fix the problem we chopped it off.  I was a little sad, but at the same time I think her new haircut is really cute.

Katelee's Journal

I kept a little journal of cute things Katelee did, starting in February 2008, when she was almost two years old.  I want to record the journal entries here for safe keeping.

February 27, 2008

Today Katelee and I made sugar cookies.  We were making them for her upcoming birthday party.  She was so fun, in her little apron, her sleeves rolled up, her hair in a messy ponytail and flour on her face!  It sure made me laugh to see her roll that big rolling pin back and forth so fast!  She was a natural.  We just might have a little baker on our hands.

February 28, 2008

Tomorrow we are going to Mesquite to visit the Thurston family.  All day today Katelee has been saying to me:  "Grandpa, Baba (her word for Grandma), Wyatt, and Beet?" Beet is "Brit."  Sometimes she says, "Beetney." She is so excited to see everyone!

February 29, 2008

This morning when Katelee woke up, she climbed up onto her little table so she could see out the window and began to yell "hello!" to the world.  She yelled hello to everything she saw; for example, "Hello mailbox!" and "Hello car!" It was cute.

Everything when Gerald comes home from work, Katelee is so excited.  She can hear the garage door open and knows daddy is home!  We have a tradition of "hiding" so that when daddy comes in he can find us.  Katelee loves to hide, but she cannot wait to see daddy and always runs out of her hiding place the moment Gerald opens the door!  ;)

March 2, 2008

One of Katelee's favorite expressions is "How 'bout..." (Translation: how about?) She uses it all the time lately:  when I ask her what she wants to eat, when she is looking for another book to read, when she is trying to decide which movie to watch, etc.  She'll stand in front of the bookcase, for example, and hold it out really long.

"How 'booooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut..."

Some of Katelee's favorite:
  • Sesame Street (she's obsessed!)
  • ice cream
  • swimming (she is a little tadpool - loves the water!)
  • showers (she prefers them to baths)
  • daddy
  • climbing up on things and balancing, such as stools, furniture, etc.
  • her bottle
  • Wyatt, her cousin
  • Mickey Mouse - the movies/shows
  • macaroni and cheese
  • letters (she learned all the capital letters of the alphabet about a month ago, and she points them out everywhere - billboards, TV, at church, home, in the car!  What a smartie!]
  • growling - her favorite way to communicate frustration
  • tickling
  • hide and seek
  • puzzles
  • painted fingernails
  • singing songs
March 2, 2008

Today is Katelee's 2nd birthday!!  She says "two" really well and tries hard to hold up two fingers.  Usually she holds up one thumb from one hand, and the other pointer finger from the other hand.  Yesterday we had a birthday party in Mesquite with the Thurston family.  Tomorrow night we will have a party with the Reynolds family.

She had fun yesterday playing with Wyatt and Madi opening gifts and eating butterfly cupcakes and ice cream.  We also played with Wyatt's new puppy and went to the park. We had a very fun trip. :)

Note from daddy: Katelee plays the "Get you" game well.  At random, she will start saying "get you" in a high-pitched but soft voice.

March 8, 2008

Katelee loves to spin in circles.  She can do it forever.  She finally begins to stumble about like she's drunk, and she is still trying to spin around and around.  What a silly girl!  She makes us dizzy just to watch her!

March 8, 2008

One of Katelee's favorite things to do is read books.  This is a fairly new thing, though.  Even a month or two ago I couldn't get her to sit through one book, but now we can read books together for an hour or more!  Some of her favorite books right now are:
  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.
  • Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
  • Gerald McBoing Boing by Dr. Suess
  • Any lift-the-flap book
  • Any Sesame Street books
Some of Katelee's nicknames:
  • Katiebug
  • Kate
  • Kates
  • Katelee Anne
  • Tatie (this comes from how she pronounces "Katie.")
  • Tatie tot
  • Sunshine Girl
  • The babe
  • Lovebug
  • Love

Gerald hurt his knee, tore his ACL, last November; had surgery in January; and is still recovering.  As a result, Katelee knows all about Gerald's "owie knee."  Lately she has been complaining about her own "owie knee," but only at times when she has to do something she doesn't want to do.  For example:

Mom: Katelee, it's time to change your diaper.
Katelee: No.
Mom: Yup, let's go.  (I pick her up.)
Katelee: (grabbing her knee and beginning to cry) No! No! Owie knee!

OR

Mom: Katelee, it's time to go to bed now.
Katelee: No, no!  Owie knee!

You get the idea!  Even though it's quite irritating at times, I still have to admire her intelligence - she's a smartie pants - but that can be kinda scary!!

When Katelee needs/wants help with something, she says, "Please, help you!" instead of "help me."  Very cute!  :)

March 10, 2008

Funny things Katelee says:

"Bless YOU!" - really loud, when she is the one who sneezes.

If we don't respond after she sneezes and says "bless you," then she'll say it louder and add our name, "Bless you, mommy!" Until I say, "Bless you, Katelee!"  :)

Tonight we were all driving in the car on our way to get some ice cream for our family night, and Katelee says out of the blue, "Mommy, Daddy, I bit."  Interpretation: "Mommy, daddy, I'm big."  She probably said it ten times, and we kept agreeing with her.

March 13, 2008

Tonight while Katelee was taking a bath she put her face close to the bar of soap sitting on the edge of the tub and said: "Hi soap! How're you doing?" (pause) "Me, too!" (giggle, giggle)  What a funny girl!

March 16, 2008

Katelee is good at mimicking us to say a prayer, but occasionally she'll say her own prayer.  Yesterday she stopped and folded her arms and said, "Father . . . thank you . . . Jesus Christ AMEN!"

March 16, 2008

Yesterday we attended a neighborhood Easter egg hunt.  Katelee loved running around in the group of kids, but wasn't very interested in picking up the eggs. :)  Katelee is so beautiful.  Right now she is eating her breakfast.  She has milk all over her face.  Her hair is in two piggy braids and is still a little crazy from a night of sleep.  Once braid is sticking way up high; the other is sticking horizontally out from her head.  Her beautiful eyes are sparkling and I think she is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.  I better go, because Katelee is now telling me: "Cereal all done!"

March 22, 2008

Every night Katelee sleeps with her stuffed Elmo, stuffed Cookie Monster, stuffed rabbit, and her baby doll.  In the mornings when she gets up, she always has to bring two or more of this group down to breakfast.  She will sit each stuffed animal in their own chair and then tell them to fold their arms for the prayer.  We cannot start the prayer until they are folding their arms.  :)  She already has quite an imagination.

The Easter bunny came to our house today, Saturday.  He hid Katelee's Easter basket behind the rocking chair in the front room.  This morning we made sure she didn't go over where the basket was hidden while we made and then ate breakfast.  When Katelee was all done eating her french toast, we told her the Easter bunny had come and left her Easter basket with treats!  "Yay!!"  she shouted.  We have to find it, we told her.  Where is it?  We hoped we would have a fun hunt for the basket.  But without moving from her chair or batting an eyelash, Katelee pointed to the rocking chair and said, "Right there."  How did she know that??

April 4, 2008

Some reflections on Katelee from the past two weeks:

Katelee put pants on by herself for the first time the other day.  This is what happened: I was getting ready in the bathroom, and Katelee came in.

Mom: Katelee, do you want to go to lunch with Lia and Laura? (our neighbors we were planning on meeting.)

Katelee: Yes! (looking down at her t-shirt and diaper she was wearing) I need pants!

Mom: (laughing) Yes you do! Pants are very important when you go out to lunch.  :)

Katelee ran out of the room.  A few minutes later she returned wearing a pair of bright blue stretch pants we use for pajamas.  She was so proud!  So was I!  Anyway, I made a big deal about it, so since then she has to always put on her own pants.  Sometimes this presents a problem.  Like yesterday after changing her diaper, she insisted on putting her "beans" back on herself.  ("Beans" is what she called her 'jeans.' Hee hee!)  I went to wash my hands and when I came back, she had her pants on backward - the zipper part was stuck on her diaper in the back and she couldn't pull them up any higher.  When she saw me she yelled "help!" I couldn't help but laugh!

A week ago we drove to Mesquite to surprise my dad for his 50th birthday.  We all went - and he was surprised and very happy!  We tried to teach Katelee to say 'surprise' for when grandpa came home, and she walked around shouting "A-prize!"

Now the weather is getting nicer, we have spent more time outside.  Katelee loves it!  You should see her ride our friend's little scooter.  She is surprisingly good at it!

Today when I went in to get Katelee after her nap, she had thrown all her blankets and pillow out of her crib.  When I walked in she started laughing and said, "I make messes.  I funny!"  I'm glad she thought it funny!  ;)

The other day we were talking about gender.  We explained that daddy was a boy, mommy was a girl, and Katelee was a girl.  I then asked, "Katie, what are you?"  She smiled big, held up two wobbly fingers, and replied, "I two!"

Today I asked Katelee what she wanted for lunch, and she replied "Mickey Mouse."

April 18, 2008

Yesterday as we drove, the weather was warm, so I decided to roll down a window in the car.  The sudden breeze must have startled Katelee, and she yelled, "Windy! My hair!"  I laughed.  She did not get that from me!

May 4, 2008

Tonight (Sunday evening) was beautiful weather, so we decided to visit the temple grounds as a family.  As we were driving there, Katelee said something funny.  We stopped at a red light, and as it turned green, and we started to go, she said, "Faster, mommy! Faster!!"  :)

Then as we were leaving the temple grounds she said, "Good-bye temple.  Bye bye, Jesus.  Bye, bye light (To the streetlight).  Bye bye birdies."  She is such a sweetheart!

May 22, 2008

A lot has happened to Katelee over the last couple of weeks.  She broke her left arm on May 9 while playing at a friend's house.  We (Jennifer & Gerald) were in the kitchen with the other adults and Katelee was in the living room with the kids.  She was sitting on the couch watching a movie, when we heard her crying.  We went to see what was wrong, and she was on the floor next to the couch.  It was late, so we took her home and we all went to bed.  She slept peacefully through the night, and seemed happy the next day.  We even went swimming!  As the day went on, though, we realized she was using her arm very little, and when we asked her, she told us her elbow hurt.  We decided to take her in just to make sure.  We found that she had broken both bones in her forearm.  Poor thing!  she was in a splint for a week and a half, and now she has on a bright pink cast that she picked out herself!  It is very sad, but also very cute.  Throughout the whole experience so far, Katelee has been very brave and cheerful.  She has complained very little.  She is a very strong and very good little girl!

June 11, 2008

A week ago tomorrow (June 5) Katelee fell while standing on a box of diapers and hit her head on the toy box.  She was bleeding everywhere.  I rushed her to the urgent care where she had to get two staples in her head.  It was quite traumatic for both of us!  Overall, she has done very well this week!Tomorrow we will go back to the doctors so she can have the staples removed.  We hope it goes well and that she has no more accidents!  A week from today she'll also get the cast off her arm (we hope)!  We are looking forward to getting back to normal around here!  ;)

Lately, Katelee has really begun to enjoy singing.  We love to listen to her sweet voice as she belts out one of her favorites.  She loves to sit at the piano bench with mom and play music and sing songs.  She also loves to sing in the car, around the house, and in the tub.  Some of her favorite songs that she knows the words to are:
  • Eensy Weensy Spider
  • ABC's
  • Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
  • We are a Happy Family
  • Here we are Together
  • Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
  • Jesus Wants Me for a  Sunbeam
  • How Much is that Doggy in the Window?
  • I Love You
Whenever Katelee sings "Eensy Weensy Spider" she can't wait to yell "WASHED the spider out!" and emphasizes the word "washed" with hand motions (throwing her hands out).

Last Sunday we were singing the rest hymn in church when we sang the words, "Today, today, work while you may," she would chime in and sing out proudly the words "today." What made it more entertaining is that the closing hymn.  It had the word "today" again in it.  As soon as she heard us sing the word, she chimed right in again.  It was so cute!

We are having a Family Home Evening about being thankful, and Gerald invented a ball game where we also list what we are thankful for.  In Katelee's exact words, these are the things she says;

"I'm thankful for . . .
  • daddy
  • movies
  • diapers (Daddy says, "me, too!")
  • Elmo
  • rubberband (which is her word for band-aid)
  • "a house, this is a big house"
  • a scarf
  • movies, again
  • blinds
  • a bath
  • stairs
  • my coat
  • bracelets
Daddy: "What do we do at Thanksgiving time?"
Katelee: "Uh . . . I do a flip."

November 17, 2008

Katelee is growing and talking so much.  At 2 1/2 years old, she is turning into a beautiful, bright, fun, energetic, intelligent, sweet little girl.  Some of her favorites right now:
  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear book
  • Olivia's Opposites book
  • No! David book
She can "read" each of these books on her own from memory.  Other favorites:
  • packing her toys around - everyday she finds a new container - a bucket, bag, purse, bowl . . . whatever!  Then she'll load in her favorite toys and carry them around all day!
  • Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.  AS she tells us everyday, "Woody is my best friend. Buzz is my best friend."
  • plastic animal figurines
Her most common phrases:
  • "I like . . . __________________________________."
  • "You are my best friend."
  • "My daddy" (instead of just plain daddy.) OR "My mommy."
  • "I'm bizzy!" (which means I'm dizzy!)
